Adrian, first my apologies for such a belated response to your fond memory but in my defence, I only came across it recently whilst searching for photos of the school. I too remember a Mrs.McDermott but only have a vague recollection of Mr.Cowie, in fact the only tangible evidence of his existence for me is his signature on my 'swimming certificate' for 25 yds breastroke in 1967. I was in the first intake to the school. My first teacher was Miss Roseberry for a while and then the lovely Mr Stevens. I lost my bus fare home and Mr Cowie gave me a lift home. I remember the plans to build a pool but we moved to London before that happened. We had lovely days.. Foreign dolls exhibitions, baking bread rolls.. my favourite days at school ever. My best friend was Janet Firstbrook.. she came from Durham. Wonder where she is now?
Yes I remember the school - I remember Miss McDermot & Mr Stevens & also Mr Cowie - he stayed at our house (The Coach House) in Blackdown Avenue one night during the 1963/4 bad winter as he could not get home - I remember having my breakfast with him across the table - did I mind, of course I didn't, he was a charming person. My father was a teacher at Pyrford School when Len Cowie was the headmaster. I remember Mrs Jones and Mrs Bugler and Miss Mcdermot and Mr Stevens, who lived by the old school in Engliff Lane. I remember being privileged to sometimes miss class and go swimmimg in the pool when my dad was taking his class for a swimming lesson (he helped build the pool), and once when swimming the Beatles came on the radio with 'I Feel ...see more
