Nostalgic memories of Rhymney's local history

Share your own memories of Rhymney and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Is there anyone who remembers the Morgan Family who lived in 18 Hill Street. I am researching for a book and I am especially interested in a Dorothy Morgan Who was born in 1928. Any information would help no matter how small. Thank you
I lived in Nursery Crescent 1950-1970. I remember Tyvies chip shop, Hill St, also Ben Johns shop where my mum would send me down to buy a cheap! ham bone. Also Planation and Forge Crescent. I went to Wellington School and Anxze Sec School at 1962-1965. Also remember Denties shop and playing in the hops at the top brewery. Also playing in the park and park pound, also ...see more
Does anyone remember Lombard shop and Lombard House on the corner of Plantation Street? It was the end that was right next door to Lower Rhymney Infants School. I lived in the house until 1958. My uncle, Tudor Lloyd, ran the shop and I went to the infants school. I would love any old pictures of the shop and house, or anything in that area. My mother was the district nurse, Llewela Jones, and my name is Jane.
Does anyone remember the fire at Upper Cross Row in Rhymney? There was a photo taken, also the tv crew were there. The reason I'm asking is, the two children in the photos are of me and my best friend Gwyneth Lewis. I was Cheryl Powell, I lived at 16 Lower Cross Row. I remember the fire as if it was yesturday. So if anyone knows anymore, I would be very interested.
I think that the Hillman Imp in the picture belonged to my mother. The car is parked outside the old surgery and library. She was Nurse Llewela Jones and she was district nurse in Rhymnry until her retirement.
My mother and her brother were born at Gypsy Castle. The family had lived there for many years and we have photos of haymaking in the 1930s etc. There were several houses standing at the time, in a group (5?). Only 2 remain, I believe. My g-grandfather Rees kept a smallholding as well as working at the colliery. My grandfather kept hens as well as working at the colliery as an electrician, and ...see more
I used to live in Carno Street, and actually watched the bridge being taken down.  Made the corner to the Barracks level safer I suppose!!! Another bit of history pulled down.  Ann
