More about this scene
Ripon is one of England's smallest cathedral cities; in 1836 it became the centre of a new bishopric. The cathedral looks massive, but is in fact relatively small; the central and two western towers are of no great height. The original church built by St Wilfred was destroyed in 950 AD. The present cathedral dates from the 12th and 13th centuries; the west front is one of the finest examples of Early English work still extant.
