More about this scene
Ripon Cathedral was begun in the 12th century, and was enlarged, altered and repaired over the centuries. The wood carving in the choir, dating from the 14th century, depicts many fantastic creatures. When Lewis Carroll was visiting his father, who was Canon of Ripon from 1852 to 1868, these wonderful carvings inspired his book 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'.
