Ruislip, High Street c.1955

More about this scene
This view looks north. The High Street, fashioned in the 1930s, drops down to the original village centre, with the graveyard to St Martins church on the immediate right. In the graveyard is a fine tomb, which was recently listed, in the style of Eric Gill. Ruislip, or 'wet place', is, like Pinner, engulfed in 1930s semi-detached metroland, but even here surprises are to be had. Not many years ago, in an unprepossessing house off the High Street, a timber-framed building of the 17th century was found, quite by accident, wrapped in its 1930s brick overcoat.
