The transporter bridge and the railway viaduct. In this picture we see the Manchester Ship Canal with the Mersey immediately beyond it. We can also see how the transporter sat in relation to the Ship Canal, and that it was essential for the transporter operator to keep a sharp look-out for shipping in order to avoid a collision.

When I went to Holy Trinity School in the 1950.s the school class was49 children 1 teacher. when we had a different subject we just changed books. one of the highlights of school was going to ferry hut where we had a drawing lesson drawing the church opersite in Widnes.which was in Lancashire in them days and then on to a new school the grange.the down side is we left school at 14 years old and then started ...see more
The year is a guess, but I have fond memories of playing in the sand at Ferry Hut, waiting for my dad to go by on his tug boat, when the Manchester ship canal was in its heyday. He would wave to me my sister and mum. The tugs I remember was the Bison/Quarry/Panther, they were all stern tugs used to steer the big ships that went from Eastham to Salford docks and back again.
