More about this scene
To the right of the picture is the foliage- covered Matrons' College, built in the 1680s as a refuge for the widows of priests who were ordained in the Salisbury dioceses. It could accommodate ten matrons, who each had their own garden but had to share the water pump and the toilet. In the centre of the building is an interesting octagonal lantern with the royal coat of arms above the doorway. The plaque beneath it records the work of Bishop Seth Ward, a friend of Christopher Wren, who founded the college.
