More about this scene
The school was founded in 1726 as an endowed charity school for 'orphan gentlewomen borne of parents of the Church of England'. For many years it occupied various premises in the Close, including Kings House, before moving from the damp, riverside site in 1847, apparently to escape a cholera epidemic. Its more salubrious site was, and remains, the one pictured here on Milford Hill, just east of the city centre beyond the ring road.
