More about this scene
St John Street is the main entrance to the city from the south. On the left is the Close Wall and St Ann's Gate; on the right the White Hart Hotel stands out, with its giant portico surmounted by the eponymous deer. Closer to the viewer is the timber-framed White Hart inn, dating from the mid 17th century. It added a grand first floor dining room in the 19th century with its unusually tall pedimented window.
