More about this scene
Not far from Chatburn and Clitheroe, Sawley would have been a popular day out even before the motor-car was common. This view, looking downstream towards the abbey, shows people obviously dressed for a holiday. A girl on the road wears a hat and shawl, whilst a man in a straw boater walks with his daughter along the riverbank.
