Bigbury-on-Sea stands on a promontory above the River Avon, which rises high on southern Dartmoor. This was a rural backwater until well into the 20th century. It is interesting to see here the competition between horse and car as early as 1925. These two forms of transport still battle for space in the lanes of South Devon.

I stayed here firstly with my mom an dad grandmother and auntie when I would have been 7years old or less. I stayed there again with just my mom and dad soon after. I remember my mom and dad talking about the great train robbery so that would give the era. the hotel was very old we were not allowed on the balconies because they were breaking down and rotten. the garden was beautifull maybe overgrown I remember ...see more
I remember bigbury on sea very well. my aunt miss Nellie yeoman owned the korniloff hotel from 1914 to 1945, an I used to be taken by my parents every year in the thirties and had a good time there as it is a lovely beach. my aunt sold korniloff in 1945 and bought a bungalow in the village called Craigivar andlived there until her death in the early sixties together with her sister Kay.My name is Richard Yeoman.
My grandfather, Herbert Powell, owned the Korniloff Hotel after marrying his second wife, Ilse Buckingham, in the 1960's. We lived in the annexe that no longer seems to be there and I remember it as the happiest time of my life. I returned in May 2012 to find Bigbury-on-Sea little changed although there were some changes to the hotel and it is now being run as an old-age home. I will always remember the ...see more
Since summer 1972 I visited Bigbury a couple of times, sometimes together with friends, sometimes with my son Thomas. The last time we have been there in 1998 for a short visit just to keep up memories.
We always used to stay in the Korniloff-Hotel, which was owned by Ken and Sheila and we felt like being home because of the great hospitality. It was there the first time that I could taste English ...see more
