Seaton, Beach And Castle 1898

More about this scene
Seaton developed as a resort in the 1850s, and in the years that followed a number of hotels were built to cater for the town's popularity with visitors. In the distance is the distinctive Castle Hotel. The building to the right, Cliff House, gained another storey soon after this photograph was taken; in the 1920s, it offered 'furnished apartments - an ideal spot for summer or winter residence'. The stout sea wall of today had not been built at the time of this photograph, hence the wide appearance of the beach.
