More about this scene

This is one of three monuments erected on the Sykes estate; it is directly opposite Sledmere House, and was erected in 1919. Sculpted in Portland stone to the designs of Carlo Magnoni, it commemorates the Waggoners' Reserve Corps of 1,127 local farm workers who joined Sir Mark Sykes' private army as wagon drivers in the First World War. A museum on the estate chronicles their story. Sledmere House was built in 1751, and the park, designed by Capability Brown, was laid out in 1777.

War Memorials

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them."- Laurence Binyon, For The Fallen

I cannot remember a bad day or a sad day for me they were magical days. Even the seasons had their own special magic in Sledmere with many contrasting feeling, even now as I am typing this I can feel the magic sixty years on. ...see more
