More about this scene
Little of the early village, which was once surrounded by large areas of open sheep pasture, has survived. In 1808 a group of cottages stood on the western side of the road facing Dole Green, but only one early 19th-century building had survived by the 1990s. Its public house, The Fox and Hounds (left), dates from 1845.
