More about this scene
The Hoy & Helmet, on the left, was originally built in the 15th century, with later extensions. A hoy was a broad sailing boat used to transport farming produce. The word 'Helmet' was added to the name in 1922, this being the hard on which the boats were drawn up. This was a centre for smuggling in the 19th century, with tunnels under what is now the car park.
