My third great grandmother, Hannah Massey, was publican of the Bull's Head in the 1800's, so it's great to see a photo of it!
Loved the counters in Salts and the fact that I could put things "on account" My mother was born in the jewelers/pawnbrokers shop just a couple of doors away from Salts. A member of the Dinnis family which has only recently given up the unequal fight
I remember Salts very well. I worked in the office from 1966 to 1969 - there were 2 separate sites on the Woolworth side of the High St; the drapery, fancy goods, babywear, womenswear, hosiery on one site and the menswear and footwear on the other site. Over the other side of the street, almost opposite the old Woolworths was the hardware, ironmongery, furniture, etc. Managers were; Reg Jones, Chris Evans, ...see more
When six years old I remember very well going from Church Gresley to Swad (Swadlincote always shortened to Swad by locals) with my beloved grandfather to purchase a spade from the hardware department of Salts. I still have that spade, the blade is a lot smaller now due to years of use by my grandfather and myself and is no longer used, it is polished and on display along with the garden fork ...see more
