More about this scene

Tolpuddle's churchyard is the last resting place of Joseph Hammett, the only Tolpuddle martyr to live to old age in his native village. Tolpuddle is perhaps the most important place in Trade Union history, for it was from here that six farm labourers were transported to Australia in 1834 for taking an illegal oath in their quest for better wages, better working conditions and union recognition. They were granted a pardon and allowed home after a great public outcry.
