More about this scene
Though restored in 1855, the church at Tolpuddle is nine centuries old. In the north transept is a memorial carved in Purbeck stone to a 12th century priest called Phillip. In the churchyard is the last resting place of James Hammett, the only Tolpuddle Martyr to return to live in his home village. The others eventually emigrated to Canada after being pardoned.
