I spent a fortnight's holiday at Cleave Farm, Upottery, with my parents, sister and brother in 1968 - a wonderful holiday. The farm belonged to the Curtis family and Mr Curtis let us help bring in and milk the cows. I spent 2 weeks in Devon and went to Upottery, as my grandmother was born there, and all her family before her; what a beautiful village. I am reseaching my family tree and though I have a lot of info I failed to trace 1 of my Grandmothers sisters, Lilly Pearce. She is on the 1901 census at Philishays farm but no trace after this. My memory is of living in the farm house at Dunkeswell Abbey with Mrs Trenchard when I was evacuated from London during the second world war. I used to walk to the school in Hemyock picking strawberries (wild) or blackberries whatever the season was. Although born in Churchstanton in 1791 my gg grandfather James Doble moved to Upottery and I have had close relatives living in the village until my grandmother Beatrice Doble died in 1982. My sister and myself were born, baptized and lived at Addington Cottages until the Sidmouth estate was sold in 1954 and we moved to Ilminster. My father, Maurice was a thatcher on the estate.
