More about this scene

This lovely Queen Anne mansion near the village of Abberley was built in 1710 by the architect Gilbert White, a pupil of Sir Christopher Wren. Elms once lined the drive, but these, like hundreds of others, succumbed to Dutch elm disease. They have been replaced with lime trees. Admiral Malin occupied the house in 1854, but its ownership changed when a local racehorse dealer, Sir Richard Brooke, took over; he transformed the mansion by adding two wings and building historic fireplaces into the fabric. Various hoteliers have owned the house since 1946, but when Lord and Lady Vaughan of Buckland bought the Elms in 1999 it returned to private ownership. However, it carries on as an internationally famous hotel, with award-winning cuisine and an excellent wine cellar.

Please let me know if you remember Mr Maude who lived at the Elms for many years. I was told at the time he had been twice Lord Mayor of London. Many thanks in anticipation of a reply. Jayne
