The Hostels 1956 65

A Memory of Abergarw.

I lived in the hostels from 1956 to 1965, firstly in 5 Ty Draw Square (around the back of the nursery school), and later in 17 Heol-y-Ynys, right next to the square (where we played football, cricket and kick the tin). As well as the shops owned by the Fords, Priddles and the chip shop, I remember the jazz band (Mr Heggety?), and the carnivals. The carnivals often drove through the hostels and ended up near the swings in "the village"...Brynmenyn proper. An annual event was also Brynmenyn Club trip...to usually either Aberavon or Porthcawl. We were assigned to a particular bus (there must have been about 20) and each child was given 10 bob....to spend on the shows (funfair).
Does anyone remember the Polish family in the hostels?.....the boys was called Ferenc Muci.
Also the Kinda(Cymdda)...the woods across the river...spent many an hour playing there. There used to be a swing attached to a tree and you swung out over the steep slope.
We once took a load of hay from the farmer's field and used it to jump into from one of the old brick shelters..the farmer was not happy. Happy, happy days
But I never knew until today that it was officially called Abergarw Estate
