Between the 1880s and the early 1920s, workers flocked from all over the south-west to find work in Abertillery's coal mines. As a result, the population shot up to almost 40,000, and the area's natural beauty was soon blighted. Here we have a panoramic view of this industrial town. Note the congested, terraced housing typical of communities like this, which developed in the 19th century wherever industry took hold.
