More about this scene
Further south, Nos 32 and 34 jut into the road, narrowing it considerably. These jettied houses (with the first floor projecting and on brackets) and the building to the left of them, Helensbourne, are 16th- century and timber-framed beneath the render. The windows are later, of course – they are Georgian sashes. On the right, No 57, the tall brick house beyond the lower houses in the foreground, is 16th-century and jettied, but it is dated 1732. Terminating the view is St Helen's steeple; the spire was last rebuilt in 1888.
