Abingdon, The Lock From Downstream 1890

More about this scene
Downstream, you reach the market town of Abingdon, once noted for its important medieval abbey, dissolved in 1538. The monks appear to have diverted the Thames closer to their abbey; much later, Abingdon Lock was formed at the east end of Abbey Meadows in 1790. Since this view was taken, the lock has been reconstructed; the lock-keeper's cottage was rebuilt in 1928 by the Thames Conservancy.
