The Broads have been called the pleasure grounds of Norfolk; they are the remains of a huge estuary that once spread over much of the eastern part of the county. No one is completely certain as to their origin, but it is believed that they are the result of medieval peat workings. At Acle, on the river Bure, wherries and sailing craft glide by under the old bridge, their masts lowered.
