Goodhall Street.

A Memory of Acton.

dear helen, searching for info on the bromyard avenue school i came across your piece about goodhall street. everyone who lived in stephenson street, goodhall street, and old oak lane cottages, as they were called, had a connection with the railway. my dad was a signalman in the box at willesden junction situated at the end of the cattle dock, opposite the station. just down the road was the tobaccanist shop, called andies. where at the end of the rationing we were able to buy sweets. i went to acton wells school and failed the ll plus, we took it on the day king george died, i thought it must have been an omen!! after acton wells i went to john perryn and also east acton house while the new school was being built in bromyard avenue. we attended those three schools for almost a year. it was opened in september, 1955, and i only attended for the one term and then left to work in the railway office trainiing school situated on euston station, above the great hall. then after six months training i went to work in the accident section in euston house for the railway. the railway cottages were an integral part of life, working for the railway, never to be found anywhere again. i would love to hear from you and learn more of my roots. i married and moved away losing touch with friends, which i bitterly regret. looking forward to hearing from you. anna roberts, nee parker.

Hello Anna, loved reading your memories. I lived in Churchfield Road and attended Derwentwater School before moving to the Prefabs on Trinity way. I also went to John Perryn, East Acton House and Acton Wells. We used to go to all these schools during the week until Bromyard opened. Mr Foxman was Headmaster. Left School at 15 and started working at S Parker and Son (Accountants) in Acton High street. Acton and East Acton were lovely places to grow up in and I have many fond memories of my time there. Kevin.
Hi I lived in Trinity Way no 20 it was a lovely helpful community
My Mum died in 1959 when we lived there
We moved away in 1961
We lived next door to the Barr family
Hi Anna
I attended Bromyard school (later called Faraday) 1959 -1965 I used to live in the Vale Flats on the Uxbridge Road past the Ministry of Pensions and cycle to school .I used to sit next to Alan Barr in my class and his mum used to let me leave my bike in their prefab garden as it was safer than the school racks I remember Alan had an older brother but his father did not live there I assumed he had died but it was not discussed .They were a very pleasant family and both boys were very clever. I had no further contact with Alan after I left school but I heard in later years that he was very highly placed in the Levi Jeans company . Who knows we might have seen each other over the fence when I was parking my bike .Hope you are well Cheers Ian
Sorry I meant to say Hi Carol and respond to your post
Cheers Ian
Lived in Vale Flats and attended John Perryn and Faraday schools 1961- 1969. Happy memories of vale flats and schooldays. Recently returned to visit the area and had a coffee in Acton Park tea rooms, lovely memories and of the whitsun yearly funfair held there.
hi june, thankyou for your memories. i do remember tthe opening of the bromyard school by m.p. dr. edith summerskill, a name not now mentioned and mr. foxman, the first headmaster, what price now sixty years on ?? we had a half hour walk to school, living on the 'outskirts' of acton, which took us passed wormwood scrubbs prison. something ironic here, the prison has survived countless ages and our school ?? regards, anna roberts nee parker.
I left Bromyard school when I was nearly 16 in 1961 I had a friend called Susan Scruby whose mum used to work in the Cafe opposite The Vale flats and another Carol Ogg who lived in the The Vale. Flats, Carol had a brother called Billy, her mum was lovely, her dad was a sheet metal worker and he worked locally.
I left school in the July and started work at Elizabeth Arden the following Monday but I only worked there for 6 months left and started work at Triplex Safety Glass in Hythe Road Willesden Junction
