The poet George Crabbe was born in Aldeburgh in 1754. His poem about the embittered fisherman Peter Grimes inspired an opera by a much later and better known resident, Benjamin Britten. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, the first woman doctor of medicine, became first woman mayor of an English borough when she took up office in Aldeburgh in 1908.
