More about this scene

We are in a marshy area - Amberley Wild Brooks, beside the tidal and navigable River Arun. The castle was a fortified manor of the Bishops of Chichester; it was crenellated c1377 to defend the coastal area and the river estuary. The manor was granted long before the Norman Conquest. During the civil war King Charles II sheltered here after the Battle of Worcester en route to Shoreham to embark for France. The Norman church of St Michael adjoins the castle. The varying height of the old houses built of flint and stone with thatch and tile, contrasts with the varying width of the roadway. It is now a village where artists like to work.
