More about this scene
Beyond the King's Arms is the austere three-storey Elmodesham House with its straight parapet. Built around 1720 for Charles Eeles, a timber merchant, it was wittily named Woodville House until 1907 when it was enlarged by six identical bays to the right and the doorcase moved to the centre. From the 1930s until the 1980s it was council offices, but it is now apartments and contains some fine 18th-century panelling and ceilings painted with mythological and hunting scenes.
