More about this scene
In 1848, Dr Goddard's niece and heiress, Martha Gale, pledged money and gave the 1742 house on the left of the picture in return for having the school moved to clear her view of the church. A three-gabled classroom block was later built in 1888. The school went to Croye Close in 1925. Lord Denning, a famous former pupil, re-opened the Old Grammar School building as the Andover Museum in 1981. The Iron Age Museum followed in 1986. By this time New Street had been diverted behind the building and Church Close created.
