More about this scene
It was from the window on the gable on the left, above the Angel's coaching arch, that magistrate Bethell Cox read the Riot Act to the mob of agricultural workers in November 1830, and was called a 'fat slug'. The rioters went to Anna Valley and wrecked Taskers machines, but stopped at midnight as the Sabbath hour struck. On Monday morning the Lancers from Winchester rushed out in force, ending the disorder.
