More about this scene

The 16th-century stone bridge steps quietly by way of its five arches across the reedy Rothley Brook; the original roadway into the village is now reduced to a footpath. Isolated, as the road now crosses the water to its north, the bridge seems to take about itself an air of romance, probably associated with the image of luxury-laden animals in fact, their loads rarely amount- ed to anything more than day-to-day necessities.
