Whit Walks Scallops Barm Cakes

A Memory of Ardwick.

Seems a lifetime away. I remember being in the Girl Guides 'marching' around the diocese in between 2 bands, then ending up back at St Thomas' Church Ardwick Green.

Scallops that were really just large flat chips, bought on late winter nights walking home from the bus stop, feeling quite safe to be out late!

Corner shops that made delicious barm cakes while we waited, and stayed open Sundays to sell the strangest - now extinct - products like Indian Brandee!

Playground games - the wind, the wind blows high... and American skipping ...........

Bands at The Apollo.

Great times.

WHY CANT WE BE LIKE VIDEO RECORDERS? SO WE COULD WIND BACK TO OUR YOUTH, AND KEEP RELIVING THEM ,OVER AND OVER AGAIN. STRANGE REALLY, PEOPLE SAY I SEE ARDWICK THROUGH ROSE TINTED GLASSES, MAYBE, BUT FOR ME ARDWICK WAS SO REAL, SO ALIVE, THE AIR ALWAYS CRACKLED, WITH ELECTRIC, FOR ME IT WAS THE ONLY PLACE ON EARTH, WAS I REALLY THAT CRAZY TO FALL IN LOVE WITH ARDWICK? BEFORE I EVER MET MY WIFE, KATH ANDERSON NEE OWEN, I USED TO TEASE A GIRL FROM CRANWORTH STREET, MARGARET GRUNDY, ALWAYS WORE PIG TAILS, SHE WAS LOVELY, HER SISTER RITA, WAS IN MY CLASS AT SCHOOL, MEDLOCK SECONDARY, MANSFIELD STREET, SHE LIVED NEAR MY MATE ELSIE JOHNSON, ELSIE WAS A REAL STAR, AND A BIT LOWER DOWN, WERE THE GREYTREX LADS,THEIR WERE SOME REALLY NICE PEOPLE IN ARDWICK BACK THEN, YOURS TRUELY INCLUDED, HE, HE, WELL NOSTALGIA IS NICE, BUT IT CAN NEVER REPLACE, ACTUAL REALITY, OF THE TIME, THE MOMENT, WHEN ADULTHOOD SEEMED SO FAR AWAY, THEN ITS SNEAKS UP ON YOU. AND YOUR A PARENT, GRANDPARENT, STROLLING DOWN THE MOST FAMOUS LANE, ON PLANET EARTH, MEMORY LANE, AS WE GROW OLDER, THE THING WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE MOST, IS THE PAST,----- STAY HEALTHY, KEEP SMILING, YOU NEVER KNOW YOUR CHILDHOOD MAY WALK BACK INTO YOUR LIFE, SEE YAAAAAAAAAAAA.
