Once famously described by the novelist George Eliot as 'the finest mere parish church in England', St Oswald's parish church at Ashbourne has long been regarded as one of Derbyshire's finest. It dates from the 13th century, and its soaring 212ft spire is a landmark for miles around.

My mother was a Woolley and she was born and brought up in Ashbourne where most of her wider family still lived when I was a child. I was brought up in Uttoxeter, my father's home town, but I was born at Ashbourne maternity hospital in 1944. I was born at the maternity hospital in 1951, My parents and I lived at 24 Clifton Road while I was a baby but moved to 66 Park Avenue as my mother could not abide my father's mother. I was born at the maternity hospital in 1951, we lived at 3 St Oswalds Crescent and my granny and grandad lived close by on Park Road. I attended St Oswalds C of E School - I had a lady head teacher whose name escapes me before moving up to Parkside Juniors - Mr Lawton was Headmaster. My family moved to Ashbourne in 1942 when I was 6. I went to school at what must have been the last of the old "Dame" schools run by an elderly lady called Ethel Hunter.
