More about this scene
This impressive picture house shows how popular moving pictures had become in the first decade after the Great War. Earlier film shows had taken place in theatres, music halls, exhibitions and even circus tents. The silent film on offer when this photograph was taken was 'Daredevil Jack', a feature about Jack Dempsey, the fighter. Notice how the hoarding boasts the legend 'Living Pictures'.
