More about this scene

Epsom is famous for two things: Epsom Salts, and the two great classic flat races run on the Downs south of the town, the Derby and the Oaks, both inaugurated in the late 18th century. The salts gave the town its first fame in the 17th century as a noted spa town, but the May race meeting still remains immensely popular and draws huge crowds. This view shows the bookies doing a roaring trade. Note the William Hill hoarding: this is still a major firm of turf accountants today.

Coronation Day 1953
My brothers and I watched the Queen Elizabeth's Coronation with a neighbour; the screen was so small they added a special magnifying glass. Even in black and white I thought it was wonderful. It was a cold day so felt chilly as being a teenager I wanted to show off my summer dress. In the evening I joined local youngsters by the bonfire on Ashtead Common. Ashtead Primary School
I spent my childhood in Ashtead in the 1950s and 60s and I went to Ashtead Primary School in Barnett Wood Lane. One of the teachers was a lovely lady called Miss Portlock and she used to bring her dog to school with her. Ashtead Swimming Pool
My Grandfather Henry Weller ran his rose nursery here and brought up his eight children. As a young boy in the 1940’s I used to go and fish in the lake and play in the brickworks behind the house. The path leading to the house I remember being red from crushed bricks with an archway of roses and roses all around on both sides, it really was a beautiful sight. Visit To Grandparents
My father's parents (my grandparents) moved from Carshalton to Ashtead in early 1950s to a bungalow at 72 Chaffers Mead. We used to visit regularly from our home in Redhill by rail; a steam train to Deepdene, a run down to Dorking North and an electric train to Ashtead. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
