Nostalgic memories of Ashton's local history

Share your own memories of Ashton and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

My mum and dad ran the George and Dragon. It was my dad's first pub after leaving the RAF. I'm almost certain we were the last ones in there before it was demolished. I have very vague memories of the place - more about the place and entrance bit more than anything I can really call a vivid memory. We then moved to The Talbot on King Street in Dukinfield (briefly) and then the North Star. This must have been around 72? 73? Not sure - I was about four or five at the time. Andrew
My 5 x great uncle was a policemen abt 1906. He died chasing robbers who were throwing stones. He was 28 yrs old & left a pregnant wife who gave birth in the same yr. We have a few photos of him. He was born in Staffordshire & his widow must have had her family follow him there. There is also a newspaper clipping of him as he rescued a runaway horse.

The Headmaster was Mr Siddal and one of the teachers Mr Worral, who lived on Oldham. This time was during the war years and we could not have woodwork classes, so had cookery instead! We had school dinners @ 4d. a day ...see more

Our misfortune was it was over the front door. The old pub seemed huge to me then, I remember learning to cycle in the bar. I went to school nearby(?) and I had to cross a cobbled street with tram ...see more
I lived in Ashton from 1940 to 1947 when I joined the Royal Air Force. I went to Heginbottom Modern School until 1944 and then became a tool maker apprentice at the Joshua Heap factory. At the same time I became a member of 247 Squadron ATC at the grammar school, as it was war time, we trained ready to enter service. Ashton was then a safe place to walk about, it had plenty of cinemas and I enjoyed ...see more
