More about this scene
The lychgate entrance to St James' church is a fine roofed wooden gateway built in 1899. Designed by Charles Ponting of West Overton, who was also architect and surveyor for Marlborough College, it was built by the Ponting Brothers of Avebury, along with the Shipway (masons) and Paradise (ironworkers) families. The chimney and wall on the old bakery (left) were removed when the wall collapsed under the weight of the ivy, and a new extension was built.
