More about this scene
On Midsummer Day 1755 local weaver Thomas Whitty started weaving the first Axminster carpet, helped by his five daughters. So well-known did his carpets become, that every time a new one was completed the bells of St Mary's would ring and the townsfolk would come and inspect the product.
