More about this scene
On the right the Market Theatre, now long gone, was behind the pub dispensing Weller's Ales, the Market Tavern. The grand Victorian building to its left, the International Stores, now the Halifax, survives, but all to its left has gone. The scaffolding beyond the lamppost hides Lloyds Bank, which was being extended and restored at the time this photograph was taken (there are rainwater heads dated 1921). Thisbank was founded in 1795; it became the Bucks and Oxon Union Bank in 1853.
