More about this scene
The large parish church is mostly 13th- century, but it was heavily restored by the great architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, a native of Buckinghamshire, between 1849 and 1869. It had got into a deplorable condition, and suffered a further mishap when the tower's parapets had to be removed some forty years ago. Its churchyard, though, is a haven of tranquillity in the centre of this busy town. There had been an Anglo-Saxon minster church here, and some of its foundations were found in excavations in 1978.
