Backbarrow Cotton Mill was notorious for its cruel treatment of the children who worked there. Originally it was a corn mill, and then a paper mill, before becoming a cotton mill. Later, it was to become an ultramarine works. Backbarrow also had an ironworks, one of the oldest in the country.
