Jones's

A Memory of Badsey.

Jones's was owned my mr and Mrs Jones during the 1940s/50's. The shop sold sweets, vegetables and household goods. Jones's was known by all in the area during that era.

I lived in Blackminster from 1944 to 1968, my name was Mary. I went to Badsey County Primary School where the headmaster was Mr. Maurice Harvey. I then went to Prince Henry's Grammar school in Evesham from 1956 to 1963. Was Jones's shop the one on the opposite side to where Mr Henry King lived? I bought my first fountain pen there for 2 shillings. There was a larger shop maybe still there, further on just past the turning leading to the church and a pub The Wheatsheaf. There was a sweetshop not far from the school too. I regard the Evesham area as home still though do not live there. I remember playing with 2 balls against a wall, marbles, and those wooden tops we coloured the tops in chalk I think. Also skipping round the playground singing "Who wants to play......?" As in most schools I remember the nit nurse and Mum's horror when she found one! At going home time children lined up in the playground. I remember a lovely girl called Heather H whose Mum took us on the river, rowing a boat. She sadly died at an early age. I hope Heather has had a nice life. She played an accordion I remember. Long ago days but some happy and not so happy memories.
