Lived Just Round The Corner From Here

A Memory of Balham.

Lived in Badminton Road as a child and teenager. There was a garage just out of view on the right. Used to walk up here to the tube and buses at Clapham South, there was a bus down Nightingale Lane, the 189, which was quite infrequent (in London terms). I also went to St. Marys Balham from 1962 to 1968, and remember Mr Scott, also the deputy head Miss Ellis. Also the Wych(spelling?) Elm tree in the playground. I havnt been back to Balham since the late 80's and have lived in Yorkshire for the last 34 years

Hello Mike,

I remember Miss Ellis, she gave me my only hand writing lesson as I remember, in the odd shaped classroom at the rear of the church.
I was last in Balham in about 1991, and sadly the old tree is now gone. It had a bench round it as I recall.
I see now, from pictures posted on the web, that the old playground, the one between the teachers office and Du Cane Court is now grassed over. It was asphalt when we were there.
Do you remember the old bombed out building and the very rough grassed over 'playing field' at the rear of the school?
