Living In Balham

A Memory of Balham.

I lived in Balham during the Blitz and Mum and my brother Ralph lived in Westlands Tce, which was bombed around 1944, maybe earlier. My dad was serving in the Navy.

My brother was in a boarding school in the country as he was asthmatic, but Mum and I were in the home. I was driven to a local Rest Centre and Mum followed. When my mum was recovered from her injuries, we returned to Balham to live in Endlesham Road and my brother and I attended Oldridge Road school, which was built in 1888. A Miss Pelling was headmistress at the time. She was followed by Miss Cumper or Cumber. My Brother went on to Balham High School. where he wore a Maroon Blazer which had a Viking Helmet embroidered on the pocket.

We emmigrated to Australia in 1948 as my brothers Asthma was worse. I still see the school, high street, Library, Pavilion cinema, Odeon cinema. We attended Sunday School in Endlesham Road, in a building directly opposite Oldridge Road. I attended Brownies in the Baptist Church in Ramsden Road, and my brother was in Boys Brigade there. I can't find any reference anywhere to my old school in Oldridge Road. Is it still there. Evelyn Caulfield, formerly Ibbott

my dad John oram spent a lot of time with his cousins Joan, Jack, Harry and Bert Lancaster. Harry Lancaster had a grocers shop on high road Balham and I have a photo of dad aged about 4 at a street party for the jubilee in fernlea or peartree road? Dad Jasmin the tube station when the bomb struck and relived many memories of this in his last 5 years with dementia, saying how lucky he was. one of his stories relates to a small boy whose head was smaller than dads and could fit through the gap of the locked gates at the bottom of the stairs and managed to squeeze through and get he keys from the station guard who lay deceased at the top. Dads head was too big he was aged 9, and has always been grateful for that smaller lads head. Balham lived with him until he passed away age 91 this year 2022 and was always so grateful to the people of Balham and his cousins for looking after him so well in the Blitz days. He was evacuated to Norfolk as their home was hit by a bomb. He always said they were in the tube station that night because their shelter in the garden was flooded....
