Colin Cecil Avenue

A Memory of Barking.

I was born in Upney Hospital in 1943 and lived in Cecil Avenue, opposite the old off license. I went to Ripple School. We eventually moved to Westminster Gardens just around the corner to Bobby Moore (name dropping) where we used to kick a ball about in Greatfields Park. I have good memories of Barking but haven't been back for at least 55 years. I often do a trip around the town on Google maps just to keep my hand in. Some of my junior school mates were Jimmy Mizon who I played football with for Ripple and Tommy Rix who I did a bit of boxing training at the school. I believe Tommy went on to be a professional boxer. Roots are important and I have very fond memories of Barking - the swimming lido in the park with boats on the lake, Saturday morning pictures at the Odeaon, Blakes Market, Barking FC on the Vicarage Road pitch where there used to be a smoke screen across the pitch whenever a steam train went by. I'm getting all emotional so had better close.
