My Barmouth Holidays

A Memory of Barmouth.

In 1946 my dad decided we would join an aunt and uncle holidaying at Barmouth. They had hired a little caravan for two weeks at Caerdaniel farm Llanaber. Dad dug out his prewar camping gear [we were camping at Clevedon in September 1939 when I was 18 months old ] and borrowed a large sack truck off his boss. On the Friday evening we loaded the truck with a trunk of food and cooking gear, suit cases, and, camping equipment, al roped on securely and labelled. This was then wheeled down to our local railway station in West Bromwich and sent overnight to Barmouth.
We caught the the train the following morning and on arriving at Barmouth, mother daughter and dog caught the bus to Llanaber while Dad and I were left to push and pull the truck two and a half miles.
On the Sunday, Dad's Primus paraffin stove malfunctioned and set fire to the tent and fly sheet. We were all set to pack up when Mr Williams the owner of the site said "no way, you've paid for a fortnights holiday, leave it to me". We spent that night in a little stone hay building and the following day he put us in a caravan (his best one) for the rest of our holiday. We have returned there many, many, times over the years - four generations of our family and this year, my seventy sixth year of camping, and probably my last, we are off there again.
North Wales - were the sun always shines except when its raining !!!!
