Lemonade And What A Shame .....

A Memory of Barnard Castle.

When I was small we used to walk to the abbey bridge from my Nanas house in thorngate,at the corner of Gray lane. The elderly couple who were in charge of the toll used to sell lemonade in one of the little toll houses, and the toilet was in the other, I can remember looking down into the toilet and seeing the tees many, many feet below. This was in the 50s, I went again in the early 90s and the little houses were gone. With so much of barney gentrified, what a shame the toll houses were not saved. 2 fish and chip shops on the bank, Fred jay the greengrocer, ascoughs for snuff, Jackson the butcher. My mam born at 16 the bank. Angela bull , my mam was connie Taylor, and nan Annie Rowe.

I remember Fred Jay in his brown grocers coat. Above Hodgsons shop where you could by a glass of soft drink for a 1d or 2d.
