This area exists today, still used for recreation. It was created from a raised area of ground where the river Yeo describes a large arc. Pilton was the original area of settlement before Barnstaple existed, and was cut off by bog and river until the 15th century. Note the wonderfully coloured bonnet worn by the child to the left.
