Christmas Deliveries: If you placed an order on or before midday on Friday 19th December for Christmas delivery it was despatched before the Royal Mail or Parcel Force deadline and therefore should be received in time for Christmas. Orders placed after midday on Friday 19th December will be delivered in the New Year.

More about this scene

One clear change in this photograph from previous views is the loss of the ornate iron railings around the whole area. They disappeared during the Second World War to be melted down for munitions. The Prideaux garage remains, although their agencies now seem to be Jaguar and Austin. Today (in 1999), the site is occupied by The Bike Shed; the garage has moved to the edge of town as a Renault agent.

An Evacuee 1940 1945 David Bush
I am now 89 but I was only 7 when I was collected from the pavement at the end of Yeo Vale Rd in 1940. I was given shelter at number 41 Carrington Terrace the home of Mr. & Mrs. Gear and their daughter Mary. They were wonderful to both me and my sister Phyllis and I had always kept in touch until Mary died aged 91 last year. All our lives we had regarded each other as brother and sister. Evacuated, And For A Few Days They Visited Me To Barnstaple 1940/45 From Plymouth
I came to Barnstaple in the year 1940, from Plymouth 24 hours, so I was told just before Plymouth was heavily bombed. I lived with my Mother at number 5 Gaydon Street with a lady I came to address as Aunty Rose, my Father at the time was stationed at an RAF airfield not far from Barnstaple . Bear Street Post Office
Not exactly 1965, but around that time. I was/am the grandaughter of the Bidgoods that ran the PO. I used to go out with my Dad delivering groceries in an old Standard 10 van. I can remember every inch of the whole building, parts of which we weren't supposed to go in! Sadly it was demolished some years ago.

Crossing Into The '60s...
I'm fairly confident that the people below occupied the properties at that time; No 1 - The Vicar of St Marys' Magdelain in Bear Street, he lived on his own, a short, dark and mysterious man with bushy eyebrows. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
